Finland has taken a major step toward sustainable energy solutions with the construction of the world’s largest sand battery. Developed by Polar Night Energy, this innovative system delivers 1 MW of thermal power and offers a storage capacity of 100 MWh.

The project, located in Pornainen, was built for the Loviisan Lämpö power station. Its main goal is to reduce annual CO₂ emissions by storing clean and affordable electricity as heat, helping to stabilize the grid and improve the use of renewable energy.

How the Sand Battery Works

The sand battery is a high-temperature thermal energy storage system. It stores electricity as heat in sand or similar solid materials, which can later be used to provide heating for homes, businesses, and industry.

The sand battery uses 2,000 tonnes of crushed soapstone.

The system stands about 13 meters tall and 15 meters wide, filled with 2,000 tonnes of crushed soapstone. This storage medium can retain heat for months with minimal loss, making it an efficient and low-cost solution for long-term energy storage.

Building the Sand Battery

The construction took around a year to complete and involved 40 subcontractors and more than 100 workers. The collaborative effort highlights Finland’s commitment to renewable energy and innovation in sustainable infrastructure.

Why It Matters

Unlike traditional batteries that store electricity directly, the sand battery converts electricity into heat, offering a cheaper, scalable, and sustainable way to store energy for longer durations. It is especially valuable in regions with strong renewable energy generation, such as wind and solar, where supply can fluctuate.

Looking Ahead

As countries worldwide search for reliable energy storage solutions, Finland’s sand battery stands as a pioneering example of innovation. If successful, this technology could be scaled up globally, supporting the transition to cleaner energy systems.

In the quest for sustainable energy solutions, the ocean’s untapped potential is gaining significant attention. The Eco Wave Power wave energy system offers a pioneering approach to turning the constant motion of waves into a reliable source of electricity. This innovative technology has the potential to revolutionize the way we generate clean energy, providing a sustainable alternative to traditional power sources.

How It Works: A Simple Yet Ingenious Design

At the heart of the Eco Wave Power system is a series of floaters strategically positioned to harness the energy of ocean waves. As waves move, these floaters rise and fall, creating a mechanical motion that is converted into electricity through a series of well-coordinated processes.

The up-and-down movement of the floaters compresses and decompresses hydraulic pistons. These pistons push biodegradable hydraulic fluid into land-based accumulators, where pressure builds up. This pressure is then used to rotate a hydraulic motor, which in turn drives a generator. The generated electricity is transferred into the grid via an inverter, making it ready for use in homes, businesses, and industries.

Scalable wave energy system with the potential to power entire towns.

Scalability: Powering Communities with Wave Energy

One of the most remarkable features of the Eco Wave Power system is its scalability. With hundreds of commercial-scale floaters, the system has the capacity to power entire towns. This makes it a viable solution for coastal communities looking to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels and transition to clean energy sources.

The system’s ability to generate electricity from the ocean’s constant wave motion means it can provide a steady and reliable source of power, unlike other renewable energy sources that depend on variable conditions like wind or sunlight.

Smart Design: Resilience in Harsh Conditions

Eco Wave Power’s floaters are not only effective in capturing wave energy but are also designed to withstand harsh ocean conditions. During storms, when waves become too powerful, the floaters automatically rise out of the water, protecting themselves from potential damage. Once the storm subsides, they seamlessly resume energy conversion, ensuring continuous operation.

This smart design choice also allows the floaters to be attached to existing man-made structures such as breakwaters or jetties. This attachment to existing infrastructure simplifies installation, reduces costs, and makes maintenance more accessible.

The Future of Clean Energy: Wave Power’s Role

As the world continues its transition to cleaner energy sources, wave power is poised to play a significant role. The Eco Wave Power system offers a sustainable solution that can meet global energy needs without contributing to environmental degradation. By harnessing the vast and largely untapped energy of ocean waves, this technology provides a pathway to a future where clean, renewable energy is the norm.

Imagine a wind turbine that pivots with the wind like a weathervane, making offshore wind energy more efficient and cost-effective. This innovative concept is at the heart of the NextFloat+ Project, led by a consortium formed by X1 Wind. The project features the X90 prototype, a groundbreaking 6MW floating wind station that is set to transform the landscape of offshore wind energy.

The X90 Prototype: A New Era in Wind Energy

The X90 prototype stands out with its unique design and functionality. Unlike conventional turbines, the X90’s rotor faces away from the wind. The entire platform rotates to align with the wind direction, allowing the blades to bend freely without striking the mast. This weathervane-like design ensures that the system is lighter, cheaper, and easier to maintain.

Innovative Design and Assembly

One of the key innovations of the X90 prototype is its triangular floating platform. This platform is assembled onshore and then towed to its installation site, significantly simplifying the setup process. The X90 uses an advanced single-point mooring (SPM) and tension leg platform (TLP) system, which eliminates the need for heavy equipment typically required for offshore wind installations.

Innovative triangular floating platform of the X90.

Stability and Efficiency

The X90 platform is stabilized by three cables that connect it to the seabed at depths of over 1,600 feet, ensuring stability even in rough seas. This design not only enhances the platform’s stability but also reduces the overall weight and cost of the installation. The quick connect system further simplifies the installation process. The single-point mooring is pre-installed, and the platform snaps into place upon arrival, reducing setup time and cost.

Weathervane-like design for maximum efficiency.

Deployment and Future Plans

The pre-commercial prototype, named ‘X90,’ will be deployed at a test site in the Mediterranean Sea. This deployment will serve as a crucial step in demonstrating the effectiveness and efficiency of the platform. Looking ahead, the consortium plans to scale up the integrated floating wind solution to a 20MW+ scale, paving the way for large-scale adoption of this innovative technology.

Conclusion

The NextFloat+ Project and its X90 prototype represent a significant advancement in offshore wind energy technology. By leveraging a weathervane-like design and innovative assembly techniques, this project aims to make offshore wind energy more efficient, cost-effective, and easier to maintain. As the project moves forward, it promises to play a vital role in the global transition to renewable energy sources.
