In a remarkable leap forward for urban transportation, Huawei engineers have unveiled a self-driving bicycle that promises to revolutionize the way we commute. This innovative bicycle, capable of operating and driving on its own, incorporates cutting-edge technology to provide a safe, autonomous cycling experience.

Pioneering Technology

The self-driving bicycleโ€™s autonomous capabilities are enabled by a suite of high-precision sensors, image recognition cameras, and advanced AI technologies. At its core, the bicycle is powered by two large brushless motors and a steering gear that precisely controls the handlebars. This intricate system ensures smooth and accurate navigation.

To achieve true autonomy, the bicycle features an RGBD depth camera, accelerometer, gyroscope, and lidar. These sensors work in tandem to create a comprehensive understanding of the bicycleโ€™s surroundings, allowing it to navigate complex urban environments safely. The control module, is essential for maintaining balance by the rotational movement of the disc. Utilizes a small high-precision sensor to detect tilt and ensure the bike stands upright, even when stationary.

A Vision Born from Adversity

The inspiration for this groundbreaking project came from Zhihui Jun, a Huawei engineer who conceived the idea after being injured in a bicycle accident. Driven by the desire to improve cycling safety and accessibility, Junโ€™s vision has culminated in a bike that not only drives itself but also significantly reduces the risk of accidents.

Power and Performance

The self-driving bicycle is powered by a 6s type airplane lithium battery, providing a runtime of approximately 2-3 hours on a single charge. The main control computing module, located right below the seat and above the rear wheel, orchestrates the complex interactions between the sensors and motors, enabling the bike to perform flawlessly.
