Very nice idea ... IF you have very high 10-12 foot ceilings. And if you do have such ceilings you are already living in a very nice home with an attic & garage. Space savings for an apartment or common home? You will be hitting your head on this ceiling-lowering shelf. May be better to frame this sideways and cut hallway in half... and stick extra items to one side.
